Kathmandu. The role of the insurance surveyor has become more important as the access to insurance has increased in the insurance market of Nepal.
According to the data of Nepal Insurance Authority, insurance has reached 49.19 percent of the population in Nepal. This has led to an increased need for skilled manpower to assess insurance claims and damages.
In the insurance sector in Nepal, surveyors mainly work in the field of non-life insurance. Their main responsibilities are as follows:
Damage Assessment: Conduct a technical assessment of the actual damage caused by an accident or natural disaster.
Neutral Report: Preparing an unbiased report to reduce disputes between the insurance company and the insured (customer).
Identification of TAG_CLOSE_span_26 the cause: Investigate how and under what circumstances the damage occurred.
Consultation: Provide grounds for recommending or not recommending the insurance company to pay the claim.
Annual Report of Insurance Authority (2080). According to 81) the number of insurance surveyors in Nepal is gradually increasing. FY 2080. As of the end of 1981, there are 1,248 licensed surveyors working in Nepal. This number was the previous year (2079). This is an increase of 2.55 percent compared to 1,217 in 80.
According to the Insurance Act 2079 and the regulations, the candidate should have a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a bachelor’s degree in chartered accountancy or a bachelor’s degree from an insurance accredited institution and at least 10 years of experience as an officer of an insurance company. A person with such qualifications can become active in the surveyor profession after completing the special training on surveyor conducted by the Insurance Authority and getting the certificate.
The Authority has divided the surveyors into 4 categories on the basis of their work experience and competence:
- Category: More than 15 years of experience.
- b Category: 10 to 15 years of experience.
- c Category: 5 to 10 years of experience.
- D Grade: Up to 5 years of experience.
As per the provision, the surveyors have to renew their license from the Insurance Authority by paying the prescribed fees by mid-April every year.
