Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MoCIT) has clarified that the smart driving license to be printed in Nepal is in compliance with international standards.

Issuing a press release, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology informed about the technical aspects and security enhancements of this new card.

According to the ministry, the new smart cards are based on ISO 7810 ID-1 quality, which is the standard size of credit cards prevalent worldwide. This time, modern technology was used to reduce the technical difficulties and foreign dependence in the full use of smart chips in the past

A total of 39 different security features are included on the card. It is divided into three levels. The first layer contains metallic silver ink and machine-readable zone (MRZ), the second layer contains invisible UV ink and infrared features that can only be seen by special equipment, and the third layer contains digital signatures and proprietary electro-

ink that can be tested only in the forensic lab.

The card has code encrypted and copy-protected QR technology. With this, the traffic police will be able to confirm the identity of the driver immediately through offline means even in the absence of internet.

The ministry has claimed that the entire production process will be done in an end-to-end offline format, so the personal details and data of the citizens will be completely protected.

This is an important step towards making Nepal self-reliant in security printing.  In the future, the capacity to print postage stamps, citizenship, passports, excise duty stickers and educational certificates in the country has been developed. The government believes that this will prevent the outflow of foreign currency and ensure the security of sensitive documents.

“We are always open to any suggestions or queries regarding printing and distribution, and we are committed to removing any ambiguities based on facts,” the ministry said in a statement.
