Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: The Association of Economic Journalists (NEA) and Chartered Accountants of Nepal (Chartered Accountants) jointly organized a one-day orientation training programme on tax and financial reporting.
ICAN council member Hem Kumar Kafle imparted training on tax system, structure of financial details and how to use them in news in the news in a responsible and accurate manner.
Kafle said that although tax and financial details are complex issues, journalists can understand the basic concepts and report in a way that can be easily understood by the general readers. He also stressed on the need for journalists to adopt special alertness as reporting without in-depth study of facts could send wrong message.
Speaking at the program, ICAN President Nil Bahadur Saru Magar said that journalists should write news based on facts and understanding the content, which will have positive impact on society.
Noting that it was necessary to disseminate the right information on sensitive subjects such as tax, accounts and financial details, he said wrong interpretation or incomplete information could create confusion among policy, business and general public. According to him, people’s confidence in the overall economic system will increase when economic journalism becomes stronger.
ICAN Vice President Ananda Raj Sharma Wagle said that the training training was useful for both ICAN and the participating media persons. He expressed the belief that the knowledge acquired by the journalists through the training would come out in the form of correct facts and balanced analysis in the news they write in the coming days. He was of the view that such collaborations would reduce the distance between the accounting profession and the media sector.
Menuka Karki, president of NAFIJ, said that such training programs will play an important role in capacity building of NAFIZ members. Stating that enhancing the professional capacity of the members is the main mantra of NAFIZ, she expressed the commitment to organize similar training and orientation programs in the coming days as per the suggestions of the members.
The NAFIZ members who participated in the program expressed happiness that they got to learn new and useful topics from the training. They pledged to apply the knowledge and skills gained in the training in the media organizations they are affiliated to and write more responsible and factual economic news in the days ahead.
