UNOPS to support integrated reconstruction in flood-affected areas

Kathmandu. The United Nations Project Service Office (UNOPS) has committed to provide technical and financial support for the reconstruction of flood-damaged infrastructure and sustainable integrated development in Rasuwa.

Minister for Infrastructure Development Sunil Lamsal and United Nations Project Services Office (UNOPS) Regional Director for Asia and Pacific Region Sarah Netzer held discussions on the issue of post-flood integrated reconstruction and infrastructure development in Rasuwa. A high-level technical team of UNOPS, which returned after an on-site inspection of the areas affected by the devastating floods in the Bhotekoshi River, met Minister Lamsal at the Ministry on Thursday.

During the meeting, Minister Lamsal said that the floods that occurred on August 10 caused a huge loss to the infrastructure sector and said that all the mechanisms of the government including the Ministry were working round the clock for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the damaged structures. Stating that development works were being forwarded keeping the effects of climate change at the center, he said that the construction of drinking water, temporary housing and other essential infrastructures has been prioritized under the integrated development plan in the damaged Trishuli and other areas.

UNOPS Regional Director Netzer pledged to provide institutional support for Nepal’s sustainable and integrated development. She said that UNOPS would provide technical and financial support to integrate the foreign assistance available for sustainable development by linking its international experience and technical expertise with Nepal’s reconstruction plans.

Director Netzer expressed commitment that UNOPS was ready to provide necessary support for the construction and rehabilitation of the infrastructures including drinking water, buildings, bridges in the flood-affected areas.

UNOPS Country Representative Alexandra Radetic, South Asia Multicountry Director Charles Callan, Senior Infrastructure Adviser Rico Valenta and other senior officials were present in the meeting.
