Kathmandu. KATHMANDU:- Dr Gopal Bhatta has been appointed the chairman of the Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON).
Sebon had been without a president for two months. A meeting of the Council of Ministers held today decided to appoint Bhatta to the post of chairman of Sebon.
Bhatta is the former executive director of Nepal Rastra Bank. He is also a relative of Vice-Chairman of the National Planning Commission, Dr Gunakar Bhatta. Gunakar resigned from the Sebon chairman appointment recommendation committee due to conflicts of interest.
A committee formed under the coordination of commission member Sanjay Acharya had shortlisted the names of Gopal Bhatta, former executive director of Nepal Rastra Bank Mukunda Kumar Chhetri, former executive director of SEBON Dr Nawaraj Adhikari and incumbent executive director Binay Dev Acharya among the 47 applicants who had applied for the post.
Out of these 4 members, the names of 3 were sent to the Council of Ministers earlier. However, the appointment of the Sebon chairman was delayed after Prime Minister Balen Shah asked him to recommend the names after studying the files of all the members.
Santosh Narayan Shrestha had resigned from the post of chairman of Sebon on April 18 after the formation of a single government of Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP). The government then formed a recommendation committee under the convenorship of Gunkaran Bhatta, vice-chairman of the National Planning Commission.
