Kathmandu. The Trump administration has revoked more than 1 lakh visas for foreign nationals in less than a year. These visas were cancelled in 2025. This included about 8,000 student licenses.
According to the US State Department, this is the largest step yet in the campaign to strengthen border security and public safety. State Department Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Piggott described the move as an effort by the Trump administration to protect American sovereignty and protect American people.
According to Tommy Pigott, the crackdown is much tougher than in years past. In less than a year, the State Department has revoked more than 1,000 visas for foreign nationals. Which is a new record. Since 2024, visa cancellations have increased by more than 150 percent.
The US State Department said in a statement that the foreign nationals whose visas were revoked had various criminal charges including assault, theft, and drunken driving. Trump’s new vetting and monitoring system has led to an increase in visa cancellations.
The State Department’s recently launched Continuous Wait Center ensures that visas are immediately revoked for those deemed a threat to U.S. citizens. Previously, visas were only checked upon application or entry into the United States. The new system also provides follow-up monitoring. If a criminal case is identified, immediate action can be taken.
According to Tommy Pigott, the policy reflects a broader approach to security. The Trump administration will protect the country from foreign nationals who pose a threat to national security. However, the statement did not specify which countries had the most visas cancelled or how many of them were tourists, students or long-term residents.
The move comes as the visa policy has become a major issue in the Trump administration’s domestic and foreign policy. Under US law, the government has the right to revoke the visa of an alien if they are disqualified or pose a security threat.
