Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: The Special Court has convicted former Managing Director of Nepal Telecom, Sunil Poudel, of amassing property through illegal means.
A three-member bench of Special Court Chairman Sudarshan Dev Bhatta and Justices Hemanta Rawal and Dilli Ratna Shrestha handed down the jail term to Poudel for 2 years and 6 months. Out of this, an additional sentence of 6 months has been added for corruption while holding public office.
The court also ordered to confiscate property worth Rs 127,75,70,237 of Paudel and pay the fine as appropriate. In addition to this, he will also have to pay a compensation fee of Rs 5,102,809 as per the Crime Victims Protection Act.
The court also directed the court not to confiscate the properties owned by Poudel as there was no clear basis for his involvement in the case.
Of the total earnings earned by Poudel, only Rs 2.21 crore has been revealed. The Special Court has ruled that the remaining Rs 12.36 crore was the assets earned through corruption.
Poudel has already been convicted in a corruption case related to digital payment gateway.
