Kathmandu. A goal, a trophy or a World Cup? Everything is run by two parts: a pair of feet. In modern football, those feet are now a billion-dollar commodity. Therefore, the feet of the world’s best football players are not only the primary means of the game but also a high-value financial asset in the eyes of the insurance industry.

Amid the excitement surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, the issue of foot and foot insurance for star soccer players has once again come into the limelight. In a competitive tournament like the World Cup, a wrong tackle, a bad landing or a torn ligament can keep a player out of the game for months. For a star footballer, this can mean not only medical expenses, but it can also mean billions of dollars in income, sponsorships and professional opportunities.

According to various international media reports, Argentina captain Lionel Messi is the most popular player of the world. The media has long reported that his famous left leg is worth around $900 billion. This substantial amount of money is not only the price of his on-field performance, but it also includes advertising, sponsorships, image rights and his global brand value. If a serious injury undermines his professional career, a portion of that financial risk can be covered through special insurance coverage.

The insurance value of Portuguese legend Cristiano Ronaldo’s feet is no less impressive. According to several international media, his leg was insured for about $144 million. While playing for Real Madrid, the club secured this safety due to his pace, power and exceptional goal-scoring ability.

There are other similar examples in football history. Former England captain David Beckham’s leg was once insured for around $195 million. Former Wales star Gareth Bale’s leg was insured for around $100 million. In addition to their sportsmanship, professional prices, advertising deals, and worldwide popularity also play an important role in insurance coverage.

However, most of the figures commonly used for foot insurance for Messi, Ronaldo, Beckham or Bale are based on reports published in the international media. The full documents of these insurance agreements are usually not published. Therefore, they should be viewed as widely published or reported insurance prices, not officially declared insurance prices.

According to experts, feet are the main source of income for football players. A top player’s income typically comes from club salaries, game bonuses, sponsorships, endorsements, image rights and incentives based on performance from the national team. Serious injury therefore not only affects a player’s personal income but also causes significant financial losses to the club’s marketing plans, ticket sales, broadcasting rights, sponsor promotions and related business partners.

In major tournaments such as the World Cup, the risk of lower back injuries increases. Too many games in a short period of time, longer international travel, different stadiums and weather conditions, more pressure from the knockout stages, and high-speed physical contact put more stress on the players’ bodies. Research has shown that playing sports in close proximity significantly increases the risk of injury in professional football players.

Risks related to temperature and weather are also major concerns for the 2026 World Cup. Temperatures can exceed 30 degrees Celsius in some places, and high humidity can put athletes under physical stress.

According to experts, excessive heat, dehydration and muscle fatigue can increase the risk of injuries to the knees, ankles and ligaments. Insurance companies consider a number of factors when insuring a football player’s feet or specific parts of the body. This includes the age of the player, history of past injuries, current market value, future earning potential, professional popularity and the size of sponsorship and endorsement agreements. In many cases, evaluations by sports doctors, orthopedic specialists, and data analysis teams also play a major role in determining premiums.

However, it is not easy to get compensation from this type of specialized sports insurance. Generally, insurance terms require confirmation of factors such as permanent or long-term physical disability, serious loss of professional career, specific medical evidence, and injuries in sanctioned competitions. In most cases, such insurance is only effective for serious and career-threatening injuries.

For this reason, not only is a star footballer’s feet the primary medium of play in modern football, but they have also become the focus of investment, global brands, and various financial interests of clubs, sponsors, and broadcasting partners.

FIFA also has a special system in place to address the financial risks of player injuries during the World Cup. Under FIFA’s club protection program, if a player suffers an injury while playing for the national team, the club may receive compensation if they meet certain conditions. The program includes compensation of up to €75 million per player and coverage of up to €80 million per year for clubs. This will partially reduce the financial risk of losing players while on national team duty.

The transfer fees, salaries and professional value of top players in modern football now reach millions of dollars in many cases.

As a result, players’ bodies (especially feet and toes) have become highly valuable financial assets for clubs. Advanced sports medicine, data analysis, and risk assessment techniques are also driving the rapid growth of specialty sports insurance.

In football, goals are scored with the feet. In economics, those feet represent a multibillion-dollar investment. Every sprint, every tackle and every shot on the grand stage of the World Cup is linked not only to the outcome of the game, but also to the multibillion-dollar global sporting economy. –Agency
