With the increasing trend of remote work worldwide, many people live in one country and work for companies in another. Such a person is known as a digital nomad.
If a person is working online for a foreign company while living in Canada, they may not need a work permit. However, the company must not have offices, businesses or financial relationships in Canada.
Such a person must not provide services to clients in Canada and must not generate income outside Canada. That means they shouldn’t be directly involved in Canada’s labour market.
Many professionals such as software developers, digital marketing specialists, business consultants, content creators and online tutors may fall into this category.
These individuals are typically allowed to enter Canada through a visitor visa or electronic travel authorization and can stay for up to 6 months. They may have to apply separately to stay longer.
International Students
Many international students studying in Canada can also work without a separate work permit. However, this should be mentioned in their study permission.
Under the rules, students can work unlimited hours on campus throughout the year. During the regular academic year, students are allowed to work off-campus for a maximum of 24 hours a week. They can work unlimited hours on official breaks such as summer and winter vacations.
