Kathmandu. Thailand’s National Disaster Insurance Scheme is undergoing its first trial under the government’s ‘Disaster Insurance Project for the People’.

The trial is being conducted due to flash floods in Lamfun province following heavy rains on October 5 and strong winds in Chiang Mai province. Under a government initiative, insurance coverage for 30 million families across the country began on October 1.

According to a statement from the Office of the Insurance Commission (OIC), Thailand’s insurance regulator, the disaster has caused extensive damage to homes and agricultural land, and there have been reports of deaths. As the country is still in the early stages of implementing a national disaster insurance scheme, Lamphun Province is working with the OIC to develop guidelines to verify and collect evidence. An online process is also being developed to speed up the claims process.
