Kathmandu. Due to the increasing frequency and severity of extreme temperatures, Taiwan has launched a pilot insurance program to provide financial cover to vulnerable groups who are hospitalized for heat-related illnesses.
According to Taiwan News, the pilot program, classified as microinsurance, was launched earlier this month by Nanshan Life Insurance. It provides the insured with a fixed insurance benefit worth $311.
This insurance policy starts when the insured is hospitalized for heat-related illnesses. Heat-related illnesses can include heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat syncope and heat cramps.
This program pilot has been launched because heat-related illnesses are generally classified as diseases in Taiwan and are covered under health insurance, although current regulations allow microinsurance products to cover only life and accident insurance.
The program focuses on low-income households and other eligible groups in selected urban areas affected by extreme heat. Social welfare organizations are designated as insured, and premiums are paid by organizations applying for coverage.
According to Sai Huo-yen, Deputy Director-General of the Insurance Bureau, the program is designed to provide basic protection against specific risks to economically disadvantaged groups or those who meet certain eligibility requirements. Initial coverage areas will be concentrated in urban heat island areas, where temperatures are typically higher than in surrounding areas. After reviewing the results of the trials, officials will decide whether to expand the program.
Eligible participants include low-income or lower-middle-income family members under Taiwan’s Public Assistance Act, as well as older people receiving a living allowance for low- and middle-income senior citizens under the Senior Citizens Welfare Act. –Agency
