Kathmandu. The United States has removed Syria from its list of “State Sponsors of Terrorism” after 47 years.

The U.S. administration said the decision was aimed at facilitating foreign investment in Syria and reintegrating the country into the global economy. With Syria’s withdrawal, only three countries remain on the US list: Iran, North Korea and Cuba.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the decision would pave the way for Syria to move towards economic prosperity. The proposal was first made in July last year.

U.S. Treasurer Scott Besant also welcomed the decision, saying the move would help bring more investment into Syria. This will strengthen political and economic stability. ’

Recently, the Trump administration has also increased contact with the new President of Syria, Ahmed al-Shara. Al-Shara was previously the leader of a militant group and the US once announced a bounty against him. He previously led an al-Qaeda-linked organization.

Last year, the US removed Tahrir al-Sham, an Islamist group led by Ahmad al-Shara, from its “terrorist organization” list. –Agency
