Kathmandu. Maruti Suzuki Swift is one of the most popular cars in many countries of the world. Globally, this car comes in many powertrains. It is available in petrol, turbo-petrol, diesel, mild hybrid and CNG variants in various markets.
Now the car can also come with a new fuel option. The company has showcased the hydrogen engine variant of this car. The car was showcased at the Vienna Motor Symposium 2026. Hydrogen vehicles have been around for a long time.
How does a hydrogen car work?
Hydrogen fuel cells are used to generate electricity from hydrogen. This hydrogen is stored in the car tank. It is used to charge electric batteries. It powers the car’s electric motors. This is how the hydrogen car runs on the road. In this whole process, only water comes out. Which means there is no concern about pollution.
However, technology is now advancing. This would eliminate the need to generate electricity by allowing hydrogen to be used directly as a fuel. Mobility technology company AVL and Suzuki Motor Corporation have developed a unique hydrogen engine.
The company is showcasing it at the 2026 Vienna Motor Symposium. This technology will be demonstrated on the Suzuki Swift. The car will run on a prototype hydrogen engine. This is what the company calls Hydrogen DI technology. The AVL system is powered by Suzuki’s 1.4-litre four-cylinder hydrogen engine.
