Kathmandu. Under the special initiative of the government under the Digital Nepal campaign, there has been a significant increase in the number of customers availing fiber internet service from Nepal Telecom at subsidized rates.
After receiving complaints from the general public that internet service is expensive, the government has been continuously doing homework on how to address it. As a result, Nepal Telecom has started providing fiber internet service at a subsidized rate from October 30, targeting the festivals of the current fiscal year.
This service has especially benefited people and families who need basic internet service. This service has been useful for customers who are compelled to take high-priced packages even though they need less internet capacity.
From October 13 to November 1, 11,764 new customers have taken it. Of them, 40 percent have opted for the discounted package.
Whereas in the month of Kartik last year, only 2,981 customers had availed this service. Similarly, in the last three weeks alone, 28,192 people have registered their names through Nepal Telecom’s online service and call center for internet connection.
Nepal Telecom has already called for a tender to expand 4G-LTE services to 1,600 different places of the country including remote areas within the current fiscal year.
Making telecommunication services more qualitative, reliable, competitive and accessible is the priority of the government. The government aims to make the current fiscal year a transformative year for the telecommunications sector. For this, necessary new policies, laws, and institutional and structural reforms will be put forward.
