Powerful earthquake hits Indonesia’s Tobelo region

Kathmandu. A powerful earthquake struck near the Tobelo region of Indonesia on Tuesday. According to the Indonesian Department of Seismology, details of major earthquakes and aftershocks in recent months are presented below

The quake struck at 11:37 a.m. local time (around 9:22 a.m. Nepali time). The quake measured 4.7 on the Richter scale, about 222 km northwest of Tobelo in North Maluku province. Its depth was about 53.9 km below the ground level.

No reports of human or material damage have been reported so far, and no tsunami warnings have been issued.

Indonesia is located in the Ring of Fire in the Pacific Ocean, which is prone to frequent earthquakes. Since the beginning of 2026, powerful tremors have been felt several times.

On 30 March, a magnitude of 5.1 was measured in the Maluku area, but there was no damage due to the deep center.

On 29 March, a powerful tremor of 6.5 was felt in southeastern Sulawesi and Maluku with 6.5 and 2.6 magnitudes respectively. The 5.9-magnitude quake struck West Papua on March 27 in the early hours of the morning.

On March 3, 2026, an earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Sumatra off the coast of Sumatra, shaking local homes. On 18 February 2026, an earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale hit Maluku Island and no serious damage was reported.

Indonesian authorities have urged coastal residents to remain vigilant at all times and to rely only on official information.
