Kathmandu. Prime Minister Balendra Shah and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres met on Thursday.
Prime Minister Shah, who is in New York to attend the high-level week of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, met with Secretary-General Guterres at the UN headquarters at 6:30 pm local time (4:15 am Nepali time) before addressing the UNGA. Secretary-General Guterres expressed deep condolences for the loss of life and property in the Bhotekoshi disaster and said that the United Nations stands in solidarity with Nepal on climate issues.
Secretary-General Guterres also praised the young Nepali delegation. Recalling that he came to Nepal in 1978 as a tourist, Guterres pledged to continue to support Nepal even after retiring from office.
Prime Minister Shah thanked Secretary-General Guterres for his goodwill towards Nepal and congratulated him for his successful tenure. Stating that Nepal has suffered a huge loss due to the Bhotekoshi disaster, he said that the risk of glacial lake bursting is still high.
During the meeting, the issues of rehabilitation of the people living along the river and green reconstruction were discussed. In addition, support for extending the deadline for Nepal’s upgradation from the Least Developed Country (LDC) list was also discussed.
