Kathmandu. MetLife Foundation has awarded $120,000 grant to WWF Nepal to implement a project called LIFE for “Nature-Based Local Community Ecosystem, Well-being and Alternative Livelihoods” project in Rajapur Municipality, Bardiya.
The initiative will support the marginalized Sonaha and Tharu communities living in the lower Karnali river basin. Frequent floods, river erosion, and decreasing fish populations pose a constant threat to the livelihood and food security of local communities.
The one-year project aims to strengthen climate resilience and expand economic opportunities for approximately 140 low-income households. WWF Nepal will implement nature-based solutions, including bio-dikes, green belts and stream restoration, to reduce the risk of flooding and protect agricultural land and settlements from inundation.
Along with the restoration of the ecosystem, the project will promote sustainable and diversified livelihood opportunities. This includes strengthening homestay-based ecotourism, supporting activities such as animal husbandry and poultry, and improving market access. In addition, MetLife employees are expected to contribute to financial literacy, budget management, and small business management training through volunteer participation. This will help strengthen the community’s capacity and long-term resilience.
The initiative will also contribute to the conservation of rich biodiversity of the Karnali River by reducing the community’s dependence on dwindling fish resources. This includes the conservation of endangered species such as river dolphins and gharials. This partnership reflects MetLife Foundation’s commitment to building resilient communities and enabling low-income populations to achieve greater financial security and overall well-being.
