Kathmandu. Hotels and restaurants that provide unhygienic, stale, flies-infested and unhygienic food to passengers traveling in public transport and charging exorbitant prices will be strictly prohibited. The Department of Transport Management has issued a notice warning drivers and hotel operators.

A meeting of the concerned bodies held at the Ministry of Infrastructure Development has decided that the drivers of public passenger vehicles should stop the vehicles only after giving priority to clean, hygienic and quality hotels and restaurants with ‘food hygiene stickers’ from the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control.

According to the department, the concerned authorities are keeping a close watch as there have been widespread public complaints of passengers falling ill due to poor quality food. If the passengers are found to be sick due to food, both the concerned driver and the hotel/restaurant operator have been warned of strict action as per the prevailing law.

Similarly, if there is a deficiency in the hygiene and quality of the food or if there is a fraud in the price, passengers can immediately call the helpline number 100 of the Nepal Police and inform them. The department has also requested to contact the nearest District Administration Office, District Police Office, District Traffic Police Office or the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control and its subordinate offices.
