Kathmandu. An earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale struck Indonesia on Thursday. As a result, a tsunami warning has been issued.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the initial magnitude of the quake was 7.8. It struck at 6:48 a.m. local time (0648 GMT).
The epicenter of the quake was about 120 miles [120 km] from the city of Ternate. It is a small but densely populated island with a population of more than 2 lakh.
The Hawaii-based Tsunami Warning System said waves were expected to hit coastal areas of Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia within 1,000 km of the quake’s epicenter. –Agency
