Suntali Sunuwar, a girl born and raised in Wamtibhandar, Ramechhap. After completing her graduation, she gets married to a young man from the village. The life and economic condition of the village was fine. She was good at reading. She enrolled in the rural municipality’s Rahat quota in the local school, and embraced the teaching profession.
Their lives went on smoothly. Her husband, Bhim Bahadur Sunuwar, used to work as a furniture worker. He had a wood-cutting machine in his house. He was also earning a decent income. The life of husband and wife was very happy.
Within a few years, they had a son and a daughter. After having two children, she underwent permanent sterilization. The village was living well according to the environment.
One of the members of the school management committee was an agent in a life insurance company. On his proposal, all the teachers got life insurance. So did Orange.
Time moved on. Since all the work is done by the government, there was no need to go out of the district. But once Suntali had to go to the state capital Hetauda. After completing all the work in the office, she went to Birgunj. She bought clothes and belongings for her family. She decided to return to Ramechhap from Hetauda via Kathmandu.
Dussehra was approaching. She also bought some goods in Kathmandu. She boarded a bus to Wamtibhandar in Ramechhap. The bus left Kathmandu a little late. The bus was to go to Bantibhandar via Banepa, Charikot and Jiri. There was a lot of traffic on the road as Dashain was approaching. The train was delayed a little later than the regular time due to heavy traffic on the road.
Before reaching Charikot, the vehicle carrying Suntali met with an accident. News of 10 dead, 3 seriously injured and 35 minor injuries came on the radio. Bhim Bahadur used to play the radio regularly while working. The news of his wife’s return and the bus accident made Bhim Bahadur’s heart chill. I called my wife, but the phone didn’t work. He panicked.
After a while, a brother of Bamtibhandar, who was traveling with him in a bus, informed Bhim Bahadur that Suntali was seriously injured and was undergoing treatment at Dhulikhel Hospital. Bhim Bahadur left his son and daughter in the neighborhood and went to Dhulikhel on a motorbike belonging to a brother from the village.
However, his wife was not there when he reached Dhulikhel Hospital. Upon further investigation, he was taken to the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Kathmandu as his condition could not be treated there. He took his brother along with him to the hospital on his bike.
But, ironically, by the time he reached the hospital, his wife Suntali had left this world. He was overwhelmed. The brother who went with him called his friends and relatives in Kathmandu. After the hospital’s procedure, Bhim Bahadur decided to cremate his wife in the village and returned to the village. In the village, small children were being consoled for being orphans and the work of Kajkiriya was being arranged.
The ritual began with a solemn ceremony. The son sat down to perform the ritual. The presence of a life insurance agent among the relatives and friends who came at this time reminded Bhim Bahadur that he was insured. And showing the life insurance file, he asked to understand the details. After looking at the insurance file, the agent said, “I have a life insurance of Rs 30 lakh. ’
The deceased received Rs 30 lakh plus Rs 60 lakh as accidental death benefit along with the bonus accrued. This money did not return Bhim Bahadur’s deceased wife, but it proved to be a great boon for his later life and children’s education.
That’s why Bhim Bahadur remembers his wife Suntali all the time. And thanks to his wife’s wise decision to insure life in a timely manner. Even today, Bhim Bahadur’s head bows with gratitude and respect when he finds an agent who insures his wife’s life.
