Kathmandu. Iran and Oman have agreed to jointly charge ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghhai announced the agreement with Oman on Hormuz. “Iran and Oman have signed an agreement on a map of transport routes to Hormuz,” he said. The agreement was signed after a week of technical talks.
After the agreement between Oman and Iran, the focus is now on US President Donald Trump to open this sea route. The U.S. has maintained blockades around the corridor, and Iran has asked the U.S. to lift the blockade as part of the deal.
On June 18, the two countries on this important maritime route (Iran and Oman) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish safe navigation routes. After that, intensive talks started about 3 months ago and now both sides have reached an agreement. The Iranian spokesman, however, did not specify the fees charged by the ship. Because Iran is insisting on tariffs on Hormuz.
“Despite the US obstruction, positive progress has been made in the negotiations over the past 3 weeks and an agreement has been reached on a shipping route map,” Baghai said in a statement. The agreement was coordinated by the Iranian Foreign Ministry. The talks included officials from defense, security and the environment. ’
Despite the agreement, Tehran and Muscat have continued to work on some remaining issues, including the wording of the joint statement. Baghai said the talks would continue until the process was formally completed. A joint statement will be issued after the talks.
Baghhai described the Treaty of Hormuz as an “independent agreement” between Iran and Oman. The aim is to ease the safe passage of ships through Strait Strait while respecting the sovereignty of both countries. He said the deal was focused on navigation and did not change Iran’s claims over the waters.
Despite the agreement on the navigation route, Baghai said that the complete restoration of security and normal commercial transport from Hormuz is dependent on the illegal actions of the US and the end of the naval blockade. He accused the United States of violating its commitments by renewing Iran’s demand for reparations. –Agency
