Kathmandu. Nearly 3,000 flights have been disrupted in Indonesia after a volcanic eruption.
The Anak Krakatau volcano, located about 150 kilometers from the capital Jakarta, began erupting late on Friday night. It started spewing lava and the volcano’s ash reached the capital Jakarta and Lampung province.
Jakarta’s Sokarno-Hatta International Airport was scheduled to reopen at 6 a.m. local time. However, flights have been suspended due to volcanic ash around the airport.
The airport said in a statement that flights will now resume at 12 a.m. tomorrow. The small Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, which is used for civilian and military flights, will also remain closed until then.
On Monday, long queues of passengers were seen at the departure hall of Jakarta’s Sokarno-Hatta International Airport. Stranded passengers lined up to get information about the return of tickets and when the flights would start.
A passenger named FINA was scheduled to return to Jakarta from the East Java city of Malang on Sunday morning. He said there was chaos at the airport and flight schedules were changing frequently. – Agency
