Kathmandu. In India, there will be a ban on vehicles that do not have insurance. For this, it has been proposed to stop filling fuel at petrol pumps.

This proposal has been made by the Supreme Court of India. The Supreme Court (SC) has directed IRDAI and the Ministry of Road Transport to develop a pilot project for testing insurance at petrol pumps. If the proposal becomes law, it would prevent the distribution of petrol or diesel to vehicles without valid insurance.

Similarly, the Supreme Court has proposed to use technology for insurance test and increase the duration of third-party insurance for new vehicles.

According to a report in India Today, the Supreme Court has directed the government to develop a pilot project to test insurance at petrol pumps. This can verify that the vehicle’s insurance is valid before dispensing the fuel. If insurance is not available, petrol or diesel can be refused. This is to increase compliance with mandatory motor insurance rules.

The apex court has also proposed to connect the ANPR cameras installed on roads and highways with the database of vehicles and insurance. This allows cameras to identify vehicles and check their insurance status. E-challans can be issued against uninsured vehicles. ANPR cameras are already used to detect speeding and other traffic violations.

The apex court has also proposed to provide mobile apps or handheld devices to the traffic police. Using these tools, the police will be able to check the insurance status of the vehicles on the road. This information can be linked to vehicle and insurance databases. This will eliminate the need to rely on physical insurance documents. Vehicles that do not have valid insurance can be identified at the scene.

The apex court has also proposed to extend the mandatory third-party insurance period for new vehicles. For new private cars, this period has been proposed to be increased from 3 to 4 years. For new two-wheelers, it has been proposed to extend this period from 5 to 6 years. This is done with the aim of reducing the problem of uninsured vehicles after the initial insurance period is over. This can help maintain consistent insurance coverage. –Agency
