How can your old smartphone become a ‘treasure’ now, not ‘kawadi’?

Kathmandu. Don’t throw away old smartphones because they are useless! Because they can now become important computing systems. Google has revealed plans to convert older smartphones into low-carbon computing clusters.

According to the news, the company wants to remove computing hardware from old smartphones and use it for cloud applications and research work. Simply put, the company wants to remove chips, memory, and storage from older smartphones and connect thousands of devices at once. It will be used as a small data center.

Google has collaborated with a research team at a US university to develop the project. At the same time, it is researching how to transform thousands of retired smartphones into new types of computing platforms.

If all goes well, the project could eventually use a data center created from about 2,000 old Pixel smartphones.

Google How will this project work?

Google’s next project is called Phone Cluster Computing. In an official blog post, Google said, “Researchers will divide smartphones into categories such as display, battery, camera, and outer body. Except for the motherboard, it holds the processor, memory and storage. ’

Many smartphones’ motherboards will be connected and the Linux operating system will be installed on them. Once all the equipment is connected, they can be deployed as a cluster. All tools will be managed through the Kuburnes platform. It can be used as an advanced cloud infrastructure.

A cluster of about 25 to 50 smartphones will be able to produce computing power equivalent to a modern server for specific tasks. The researchers want to connect hundreds or thousands of devices to create a platform that can provide cloud-based services.

What is Google’TAG_OPEN_strong_22 s goal?

Google believes that computing’s carbon footprint comes primarily from two sources. The first is the energy consumed during the operation of the system and the second is the energy consumed during the production of new hardware. The company aims to reduce carbon emissions by using older handsets.

The research team is working to create a computing cluster of 2,000 smartphones. This system will be used for programming and computing. –Agency
