Health insurance and mental health issues raised in House of Representatives

Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: The newly-elected lawmakers of the House of Representatives have drawn the attention of the government on the issues of physical infrastructures, education, health and insurance as well. In Tuesday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, lawmakers raised the issues of health insurance, access to health care, mental health, access to education, infrastructure and food security.

Speaking at the meeting, lawmaker Dr. Dr. Ojaswi Sherchan stressed on the need of policy reforms to make the health insurance system sustainable. She also stressed the need for a progressive tax to raise resources for health insurance. Stating that the Health Insurance Board is yet to pay more than Rs 16 billion to the hospitals, she said that the general public has been facing problems as the hospital has not provided health services.

On the occasion, lawmaker Khima BK viewed that although the constitution has recognized health services as the fundamental rights, it has not been implemented in practice.

Lawmaker Kranti Shikha Dhital has raised the issue of mental health with priority. She called for a clear policy for the mental health of citizens and security personnel and ensuring psycho-social counselling services.

Member of Parliament Dr. Chairperson of the hospital, Dr. Ankita Thakur, drew the attention of the government towards deprivation of service to the patients as Gajendra Narayan Singh Hospital has not been handed over the building of the hospital which has been constructed recently.
