Kathmandu. It takes patience, consistency and sincere hard work to reach the pinnacle of success in the insurance industry. Narayan Bahadur Gurung of Khaniyabas Rural Municipality in northern Dhading is an example of this. Dedicated to the insurance sector, he has achieved MDRT targets 5 times with Sanima Reliance Life Insurance and has become COT 3 times.

Gurung, who is currently living in Kamal Binayak of Bhaktapur, has been running insurance business from Banepa region of Sanima Reliance Life. Gurung, who has made a name for himself as a successful agent today, was not easy in his insurance journey. He unknowingly entered the insurance sector in 2061 BS. However, he could not continue with the insurance at that time. Life took him to a different turn and he spent nearly 10 years in the Gulf countries while working abroad.

Gurung, who came to Kathmandu after passing his SLC from Dhading, left his studies and went abroad. After sweating abroad for a long time, he returned home and continued his studies. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in sociology. The journey of Gurung, who has been pursuing studies and profession simultaneously amidst the ups and downs of life, is inspiring for many.

Gurung’s journey as an agent began with a landlord in Kathmandu. He obtained his license at the request of a landlord who was active in the agent profession. He still remembers the landlord’s words, “Your college is in the morning, you can do this part-time.” ’

Gurung says, “I didn’t understand much, but I thought if something happens, I should do it.” This simple thought changed the course of his life.

Gurung’s family background is also interesting. His father served in the Indian Army. So he was born in India. However, he completed his education from Batsaladevi Secondary School in Khaniyabas Rural Municipality of northern Dhading. There is a large family of parents, three brothers and two sisters at home. Currently, his family is living in Bhaktapur.

After returning from abroad, 2-3 years passed without doing much after the earthquake. In the midst of the dilemma of ‘what to do, what to do’, he started working full-time in insurance. He has been involved in this journey since the initial days of Sanima Life Insurance.

Entering Sanima Life is also a special occasion. The entire team of the previous company he was working for joined Sanima Life. This helped him settle into the new company quickly. Gurung says, “In a new company, there are some sorrows, there are also things of service and facilities, there are both opportunities and challenges.” With this in mind, he also worked with him to build a team. This further strengthened his foundation in Sanima.

So far, Gurung has issued more than 700 insurance policies. Since becoming active in insurance, he has dedicated himself to this field full-time. “I didn’t think of choosing any other field other than insurance,” he says, adding, “I didn’t try to do anything else.” ’

Currently, more than 150 agents are associated with Gurung’s team. Some of them are very active and some are inactive. However, Gurung’s belief is clear that with the right guidance, discipline and consistency, anyone can achieve success in the insurance sector. ’

From village to city, from abroad to home, from struggle to success, Gurung’s story is not only a personal achievement but also a powerful example of the potential in the field of Nepali insurance.

Campaign to connect insurance with daily life

Gurung is known as a person who presented insurance not only as a financial product but also as the basis of a secure life for tomorrow. Gurung, who has long experience in the insurance sector, has achieved remarkable achievements on the basis of his personal relationships, practical thinking and continuous hard work.

Gurung started his insurance business with his relatives, family members and friends. Although it was initially limited in scope, the sincerity and results shown in the work kept adding from one family to another and from one member to another. Now, there are astonishing examples.

According to Gurung, four members of a family have taken up to 13 insurance policies. They continue to provide insurance according to time, income and need. According to him, insurance is being taken as a safe and reliable option in the market when the expected returns are not coming from other investment options.

Gurung tries to explain the insurance by connecting it with life rather than in the style of ‘let’s do it’. He says, “I explain insurance in simple language. After food, shelter and cotton, health and education should be prioritized. Saving is essential for health and education. ’

Giving an example of the structure of Nepali society, Gurung adds, “In our society, there are many responsibilities like marriage of children, responsibilities of family, etc. I explain the need for insurance by covering these issues related to daily life. ’

Another important aspect of Gurung’s professional journey is the internationally accredited MDRT. Gurung has received MDRT from Sanima Reliance Life 5 times in a row. Of these, 3 are COT and 2 MDRT.

According to Gurung, Sanima has not made any formal claim to the MDRT qualification in the company he worked for before joining Reliance Life. He has registered with MDRT five times, from 2022 to 2026 and this time. The COT achievements were achieved in 2022, 2025 and 2026.

In terms of professional performance, Gurung is considered to be one of the pioneers in Sanima Reliance Life. He is presenting himself as a role model within the company. He applied to attend the MDRT conference in 2022 but has experience of not getting a visa to Australia. He also says that the fees to be paid for the global accreditation of MDRT will be expensive for a country like Nepal.

In Gurung’s view, insurance is not only a means of risk management but also a means of saving for tomorrow and financial security for the family. “If something happens, the family will be relieved from the financial risk in your absence,” he says.

In addition, Gurung points out the need for a culture of savings in the society. “We should make a habit of saving less for earning less, earning too much. Savings here are not only about money, but also about time and other resources,” he emphasizes.

This thinking and continuity of connecting insurance with lifestyle has established Gurung as an inspirational personality in the insurance sector.
