Kathmandu. France’s Supreme Court has overturned the government’s decision to ban social media for children under the age of 15. The court ruled that the social media ban violates freedom of expression.

French lawmakers backed a law on banning social media in July. It became the first European country to ban children from these platforms amid concerns about its negative impact on children’s mental health.

French President Emmanuel Macron pledged to implement it in a phased manner from September. The court’s decision has betrayed his promise.

Macron immediately asked Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu to draft a new one after taking all the points of the court into account. –Agency
