Directive to mention MRP and label on goods

Kathmandu. The government has made it mandatory to mention the maximum retail price (MRP) and label on the goods.

The Department of Supplies and Consumer Protection under the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies issued an urgent notice to this effect. The directive also made importers, producers, sellers and consumers aware about the mandatory requirements related to MRP and labeling of goods.

The department has directed all stakeholders to follow this directive to ensure the rights of consumers by maintaining transparency in the price of goods in the market.

Importer’s Liability: Label of imported goods should be affixed at the customs point with details of the importer mentioning the maximum retail price (MRP). The Department of Customs has been requested to regulate and facilitate the implementation of this provision.

Manufacturer’s Liability: The industry should keep a permanent label on the packaging clearly showing the price, batch number, weight and date of the product during the production of the goods. The meeting has requested the Department of Industry to regulate and facilitate the implementation of this provision.

Responsibility of Seller (Wholesale & Retail): Shall not buy or TAG_CLOSE_span_19 sell any goods that do not have a clear label and Maximum Retail Price (MRP).TAG_OPEN_span_19 Do not sell and distribute at more than the price mentioned on the label (MRP) on any pretext.

Special Message to Consumers: It is requested to make a habit of buying any product only after looking at the details of the maximum retail price (MRP), the time period to be consumed, etc.

According to Clause 32 of the Consumer Protection Act, 2075, all the District Administration Offices and Local Levels have been given authority by assigning the responsibility of Inspection Officer for market monitoring in their respective areas. Accordingly, it is requested to conduct market monitoring with clear labels and maximum retail price (MRP).

Likewise, the market monitoring team deputed by the Department has intensified monitoring activities aimed at the implementation of the maximum retail price (MRP). The department has directed all entrepreneurs to implement the MRP system.

The department has warned that action will be taken as per the prevailing law if anyone is found not having a label with MRP or charging more price during the monitoring.
