Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: Deputy Speaker Ruby Kumari Thakur has called for collective efforts from all sides to end the harmful practice of dowry taking place in the society. In a Facebook message, she urged people to encourage honour-based and cultured marriages by participating in anti-dowry campaigns.
She has made it clear that she will not participate in the dowry marriage. She has also requested the government to send a clear message in the marriage invitation letter {{TAG_CLOSE_em_25 TAG_OPEN_em_25}}, “Dowry-free marriage, taking and giving dowry is a social and legal crime”.
She posted a message on her Facebook page saying, “
Hello everyone, {
Lately I’ve been receiving a lot of wedding invitations. However, none of the cards explicitly mention “dowry-free marriage”. This indicates that our society is still not fully free from serious social evils like dowry.
Not only taking and giving dowry, but also accepting marriages based on dowry transactions, participating in such ceremonies or receiving banquets is a socially unacceptable and legally punishable practice.TAG_OPEN_em_22 Such practices directly attack the dignity, equality and TAG_CLOSE_span_14 TAG_OPEN_span_14 rights of women.
If we really talk about social change, dream of the development of the country and want to stand against social evils, then we have to start the change with ourselves. Even a small step taken at the individual level can lead to great social transformation.
Therefore, I would like to inform you that I will not be able to attend a wedding where a dowry is transacted. Please encourage the practice of dowry-free, equality-based and cultured marriages.
