Kathmandu. In recent times, there has been a growing trend of Indian families hosting weddings abroad. At the same time, the demand for destination marriage insurance (travel insurance) is also increasing rapidly.
According to data from Policybazaar, the purchase of destination wedding insurance (travel insurance) in India increased by 27.4 percent between 2023 and 2024. This growth rate will continue until 2025.
This growth reflects a shift towards international weddings becoming a mainstream option, as well as a greater awareness of the financial risks involved in multiday and high-cost travel.
These travel insurance buying patterns now closely follow the Indian wedding calendar instead of the usual holiday season. The wedding season between November and December sees the biggest increase in foreign travel.
Thailand remains the most popular destination for Indians due to its visa ease and marriage infrastructure, while other destinations such as the UAE, Vietnam and Sri Lanka are also seeing strong demand. European destinations such as Italy, Spain and Greece are among the top choices for the highest-spending group.
A report by Policybazaar reveals that the wedding journey is a family-wide event that encompasses multiple generations. This includes 40 percent of couples self-insured, and 60 percent of parents and other senior travelers.
The report notes that due to the age mix in this travel insurance, medical emergency and pre-existing disease coverage has been prioritized.
