Kathmandu. The National Cyber Security Centre under the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Government of Nepal has issued a special cyber security advisory after the recent increase in the attacks of ‘Ransomware’ on the IT systems.
The Centre has urged the general public and various organisations to be aware of the damage that can be caused by such digital attacks.
Ransomware is a type of malicious software that locks important files and data on a user’s computer, mobile or other device. After locking the data, the attacker demands a ransom from the victim to recover the files.
According to the center, ransomware spreads when opening suspicious attachments in emails, clicking on fake links on social media or SMS, using unsafe sources or “pirated” and “cracked” software, not regularly updating operating systems and anti-viruses, using unsecured networks and suspicious USB devices.
The Cyber Security Center recommends taking the following precautions to avoid ransomware:
1. Data Backup: Take regular backups of your important data and keep it safe in cloud or offline storage.
2. Software Update: Always download software only from the official website or store and keep the system updated regularly.
3. Awareness: Do not open links or emails from strangers.
4. Strong security: Use strong passwords and install a quality anti-virus system.
In case of a random ransomware attack, the Centre has instructed to take the following steps immediately:
To prevent the malware from spreading to other devices, it is recommended to immediately disconnect the internet or intranet, change the passwords of email and system logins immediately, ensure that the data is not returned by making a payment, and this will further encourage criminals.
Inform the Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police and National Cyber Security Centre with details about the incident.
