Kathmandu. TAG_OPEN_span_23Nazrul Islam, the former chairman of Bangladesh’s First Islamic Life Insurance Company, has been arrested in connection with a corruption case.
The Bangladesh Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched a probe against former chairman of First Islamic Life Insurance Company (FILIC) Nazrul Islam and its director MA Khalek on charges of fraudulently embezzling an additional 137 TAG_OPEN_span_22.1 million taka (Rs 158.1 million).
The Dhaka Tribune reported that the officials were appointed after the head office of the commission recently decided to investigate their case. Nazrul Islam was arrested on October 23 by the commission} and he is currently in custody for trial on the orders of the court.
Earlier, on July 31, the ACC had filed a case against 24 people, including former chairman Islam and managing director of Forest Islamic Life Insurance Company, for allegedly embezzling 450 million taka (Rs) in the name of buying the company’s assets.TAG_OPEN_span_17 Syed Ataul Kabir, the company’s deputy director, filed the suit as the plaintiff.
The other accused in the case include 30 high-ranking officials, including Islam’s wife Taslima Islam, former managing director Mohammad Hemayat Ullah and former director of Forest Islamic Life Insurance Company.
In the case, a case has been filed against the accused under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) on the charge of misappropriating Rs 450 million in the name of purchasing land and building for Rs 207.36 million and concealing illegal resources and handing it over to interested parties and unknown persons.TAG_OPEN_span_16
