Colombia declares state of emergency after powerful earthquake

Kathmandu. A powerful earthquake in Colombia has caused widespread destruction. At least 111 people have been killed in the 7.4-magnitude quake.

Colombia has declared a state of emergency in view of the developments. Officials said the death toll could rise.

According to the Colombian Geological Service, the quake struck at 7:34 a.m. local time. The epicenter of the quake in Chocho province was about 103 kilometers below the ground. The quake struck hundreds of kilometers across western Colombia.

The worst-hit areas include the town of Pereira and its surrounding areas, famous for its coffee production. Significant damage was also reported in the Valle del Cauca area.

The town of Pereira, about 55 kilometres from the epicenter, suffered significant damage. Local officials said at least 40 people were killed in the town of Pereira and surrounding areas, with 65 buildings collapsing. People are feared trapped in 15 of these buildings. Curfew has been imposed in some parts of the city.

The town of Kali, about 160 km south of Pereira, has also been badly damaged. According to officials, 32 buildings have collapsed. Kali is about 200 km away from the epicenter of the earthquake.

Rescue and relief operations are underway. Authorities are working to rescue people trapped in the collapsed building. –Agency
