Kathmandu. Russia’s central bank has instructed Russian insurers to recover risks related to liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies to China.

According to a report in the Odessa Journal, through this action, Russia aims to shift some of the financial risks associated with LNG shipments to China to the Chinese market. China is currently the sole buyer of Russian LNG.

Data from the General Administration of Customs of China showed that Russian LNG imports to China increased by 18.3 percent in 2025. In the first quarter of 2026, Russia supplied 1.4 million LNG to China. This is 6.72 percent more than a year ago.

Participation in this scheme offers strong benefits to China. Because whoever controls the terms of insurance also controls the logistics and delivery potential. However, it is not a formal ownership of the property. It has a similar effect.

Since 2022, Russian insurance companies have been cut off from Western insurance markets. In addition, domestic capacity is insufficient due to the volume of LNG shipments and complex logistics. –Agency
