Car and home theft insurance claims rise in Victoria

Kathmandu. The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) has urged the Victorian state government to address the rising incidents of theft.

New National Property Crime Statistics show insurance claims related to car theft and home theft are on the rise in the state. 2025. In 2026, there were more than 12,300 car theft and home theft insurance claims in Victoria. As a result, insurance companies lost AU$244 million. According to the ICA, similar claims declined in all other states and territories during the same period.

According to the ICA, there were about 3,900 property theft insurance claims in Victoria last year. That was worth more than AU$56 million. The ICA is calling for state-level strategies to reduce car theft and property crime, as well as improved intelligence sharing and investment in specialized law enforcement agencies.

The ICA has also urged the government to establish a centrally coordinated, state-led and funded system for post-disaster cleanup. – Agency
