Kathmandu. The government has forwarded the process of appointing ambassadors to various countries. Issuing a notice, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has invited applications and recommendations for the appointment of ambassadors to different countries.
Interested and eligible candidates can also submit their applications under the ambassador appointment process. Also, any other person or agency can recommend the name of the eligible candidate. Subject to the Ambassador’s Appointment Directive-2075 BS, candidates can be recommended as per the working conditions (ToR) available on the website.

The last date for submission of applications and recommendations is June 5, 2026 at 5 pm. The Ministry has clarified that the applications that have not been completed or have exceeded the deadline will not be included in the selection process. According to the Ministry, a preliminary list would be prepared from the applications received and recommendations and shortlisted candidates would be shortlisted on the basis of merit and suitability.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will recommend the names of the applicants after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. After that, the Parliamentary Hearing Committee will hold the hearing and the final appointment will be made only after receiving the ‘Agrimo’ from the concerned country.
The term of the ambassador will be 4 years. There is a provision that the government can recall it before the term of office. The salary and perks will be at par with that of a special class government employee.

- Must be a citizen of Nepal at least 35 years of age.
- Bachelor’s degree from a university recognized by the Government of Nepal.
- Must have experience in Nepal’s foreign policy, international relations or bilateral or multilateral diplomacy and should be able to represent Nepal.
- should be good proficiency in the English language (even better if you know the official language of the country where the ambassador is going to go).
- There should be no conflict of interest or personal interest in the proposed country.
- Must have high moral character and conduct.
- Must have the ability to work in extremely challenging situations.
- Must have knowledge of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and related international diplomatic practice.
- A person who has not obtained a permanent or temporary residence permit or immigration facility (PR) from any country.
- A person currently working in any international or foreign-funded non-governmental organization is not allowed to apply.
- The name should not be included in any blacklist prepared by the Government of Nepal or any other international agency.
- A 10-year cooling period for a person who has worked in a position to receive the salary of a foreign government.
- A person who has been dismissed from the government service of Nepal or who has been disqualified from government service in the future is prohibited from applying for ambassadorship.
- A person convicted by a court of law for an offence related to corruption or moral turpitude shall not be allowed to apply.

Added Qualifications
- Special training or certification in diplomacy, international trade or multilateral negotiations.
- Experience at the leadership level in the field of government, diplomatic, private, non-governmental organization or public service at the national or international level.
- Good experience in financial management and administrative oversight.
- Experience working in bilateral or multilateral negotiations, treaty making or international legal frameworks.
- Experience having previously worked or posted in the proposed country or region.
- Experience in trade promotion, investment facilitation or economic diplomacy.
- Ability to establish and maintain relationships with high-level government officials, political leadership, business sector, civil society, and the diplomatic community.
- Experience in collaboration with the media and public diplomacy.
A master’s degree (TAG_OPEN_li_59 master’s degree or higher) in international relations, political science, law, economics, public administration or a related field.
