Kathmandu. Adani Group has secured another project in Bhutan.
Adani Group’s Adani Power Company has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with state-owned Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) for the 770 MW Chamkharchu-1 hydraulic project in Bhutan. Adani Power will own 49 per cent and the local company will own the remaining 51 per cent. The Adani Group and the Bhutanese government have entered into a strategic partnership to develop 5,000 MW of hydropower. The project is a part of this partnership.
Chamkharchu-1 is the second major hydropower project between the two partners. The two companies had earlier signed an agreement in September 2025 for the 570 MW Wangchu hydropower project. The Adani Group and DGPC had signed an agreement in May 2025 for the development of 5,000 MW of hydropower.
The Chamkharchu-1 project is located on the Chamkharchu River in the Zemgang district of central Bhutan. The river is a major and important river in Bhutan. It flows mainly through the Bumthang Valley in central-northern Bhutan. The project will be implemented on the Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) model. Construction is targeted to begin in the first half of 2027 and is expected to be operational six years after the foundation stone was laid.
Bhutanese Prime Minister Lyonchhen Dasho Tshering Tobgay was also present at the signing ceremony. Speaking on the occasion, Anil Sardana, Managing Director, Adani Power, said, “Hydropower will play an important role in accelerating the energy transition in South Asia. The project will make a significant contribution to enhancing energy security, reducing carbon emissions, and advancing shared sustainability goals. ’
According to Sardana, the project is expected to help meet Bhutan’s peak power demand during the winter months. It will also enable the export of additional green energy to India during the summer months. This will benefit both countries in the long run. – Agency
