Kathmandu. As many as 60 countries have come together against imposing tariffs on transportation through the world’s most important sea routes.

Following the initiative of the European Union, these countries have opposed illegal tariffs and restrictions on ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The declaration, issued on October 12, was supported by several EU member states, including Australia, Japan and the United Kingdom.

These countries should work together to maintain safe and uninterrupted navigation through international sea lanes. The declaration clearly states that ships transiting international sea lanes should not be subject to tariffs that impede their movement.

Countries have opposed requirements such as illegal tariffs, discriminatory bans, and prior permissions. The initiative was announced by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kalas. The aim is to keep sea lanes open under international law and prevent unilateral actions by any country that disrupts shipping.

Hormuz is an important sea route between Iran and Oman. Oil and natural gas from the Gulf region reach various countries of the world through it. Before the outbreak of the war, about one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) passed through this route.

Iran has put forward a plan to charge ships passing through Hormuz for navigation, security and other services. The proposal has raised concerns about international maritime trade and shipping.

Restrictions or additional tariffs on seafarers can increase freight costs. It can also affect oil and gas supplies, trade, and commodity prices. For this reason, those 60 countries have emphasized the need to keep sea lanes open and comply with international rules. It remains to be seen how countries will implement this joint declaration to maintain maritime traffic. -Agency
