CAAN’s circular for mandatory Covid19 insurance draws flak

Kathmandu: The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has made Covid19 insurance mandatory for all the passengers of international flights. The CAAN has issued a circular on December 12, regarding the mandatory insurance coverage of all the passengers of international flights.

According to the circular, irrespective of nationality all the passengers travelling to or from Tribhuwan International Airport(TIA) must get an insurance coverage for 14 days hotel quarantine and medical expenses upto USD 5,000. The insurance policy must be issued in such a way that the insurer shall receive the claim from Nepali insurance companies.

However, the aviation service providers have criticized the CAAN’s move for mandatory Covid19 insurance. They have opposed the decision claiming that it will unnecessarily make the air travel costlier and foreigners would hesitate to visit Nepal. Recently, in a move to promote tourism, the federal government had waived visa fees for foreigners.
