Insurance companies in the Asia Pacific region are expected to bear losses due to the risks related to the increasing weather.

According to Moody’s Ratings, property and casualty insurance companies in the Asia Pacific region are projected to see an increase in weather-related losses due to the increasing frequency and severity of natural disasters, rising prices of insured assets, and an increase in the number of people buying insurance. In key Asia Pacific markets with the exception of Australia and Japan, insurance companies have experienced minimal weather-related losses due to low insurance penetration. However, with urbanization, economic growth, and the expansion of insurance coverage, their risk is likely to increase over time.

The impact on the markets will be different. Insurance companies in Australia, China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan may face different levels of risk.

Moody’s has said that insurance companies will rely on strong capital buffers to cover losses. In addition, they will resort to reinsurance, risk-based pricing, and strong underwriting to manage the growing risk.

In key markets in the Asia Pacific region, the risk-based solvency ratio of insurance companies is well above the regulatory minimum. Moody’s expects these companies to protect their income and manage capital carefully as the risk of catastrophe losses increases. Reinsurance will be an important tool to limit volatility in income and capital, especially for insurers in Australia, Japan and Taiwan.

The ability to adjust premiums to variable risks will help insurance companies maintain their profits. More use of geospatial analysis, risk maps, and predictive modeling will help insurance companies evaluate risks and select policies more carefully.

Investments in technology and data analytics are expected to help prevent losses, reduce claims severity, and limit income fluctuations. Government support and regulatory changes will play a key role in disaster risk management and expanding insurance coverage. Governments are providing reinsurance capacity, premium subsidies, and public-private risk-sharing arrangements. This enables insurance companies to cover risks that would otherwise be difficult to insure.

Regulatory support for insurance-linked securities could attract more private capital into the disaster-risk market. This would provide more opportunities for insurance companies to transfer risk and diversify their sources of reinsurance capital. Despite these measures, rising weather-related losses will put additional pressure on insurance companies over time.

Effective risk management and adequate capital protection will be even more important. According to a recent report by Gallagher Rico, the global economic damage from natural disasters in the first nine months of 2026 reached at least $242 billion. While the insured losses were about $92 billion.

In its third-quarter Natural Disaster and Climate Report published on Oct. 21, the reinsurance company reported that these economic and insured losses for the first three quarters of the year were the lowest since 2015 and 2019, respectively.

The report noted that the number of disaster events remained close to average. However, due to the absence of any major disasters, the level of damage remained relatively low. The third quarter marked the sixth consecutive quarter without a natural disaster. As a result, the insured loss exceeded $10 billion. -Agency

Kathmandu.
