Canada, Belgium, and the United Kingdom have significantly increased their holdings in U.S. Treasuries during this period. On the other hand, Japan and China have reduced their holdings. <\/p>\n
Canada has contributed the most to the increase in foreign holdings in the U.S. Treasury in August. Its holdings have increased by $38 billion to $465 billion. This is the fourth highest ever. Belgium has followed. Its holdings have increased by $20 billion to $491 billion. <\/p>\n
Britain is the second-largest holder of the US Treasury. It increased its holdings by $11 billion to $1.01 trillion in August. <\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Japan, the largest foreign holder, has reduced its holdings in U.S. Treasuries by $36 billion to $1.07 trillion. That’s the lowest level since November 2024. <\/p>\n
China, the third-largest holder of U.S. Treasuries, reduced its holdings by $27 billion to $591 billion in August. This is the lowest level since August 2008. <\/p>\n
Foreign holdings in U.S. Treasuries have been rising, despite continued sell-offs from Japan and China. <\/p>\n
The U.S. debt has exceeded $40.3 trillion. It has grown rapidly over the past few decades. In 1990, it was $3.2 trillion and in 1995 it reached $500 billion. Over the next five years, the pace slowed a bit. In 2000, it reached $5.7 trillion. <\/p>\n
