Recently, the crisis and internal displacement caused by the complex weather and mountain disasters caused by climate change in Nepal, especially the devastating floods in the Bhotekoshi and Budhigandaki rivers, are becoming very serious.

Climate change has accelerated the processes of glacier melting, perfrost melting, and water pressure in the rocks in the Himalayan region. This has greatly increased the risk of flash floods, landslides, and glacial eruption disasters in river basins such as Bhotekoshi and Budhi Gandaki.

Due to the floods in Bhotekoshi and Budhigandaki, thousands of citizens have been forced to leave their homes and displace to safer places. The IOM report also shows that climate and disaster-induced internal displacement is setting new records worldwide, which has directly affected Himalayan countries like Nepal.

Floods and mudslides have caused major damage to riverside settlements, hydropower projects, motorways, suspension bridges and road networks. This has completely taken away the livelihood of local residents and forced people to seek shelter in temporary camps or elsewhere for a long time.

Climate change directly and indirectly forces people to leave their homeland. Floods, landslides, flash floods and cyclones make people homeless in an instant, causing them to be immediately displaced internally. The effects of warming, glacial melting, drought, depletion of agricultural production, depletion of groundwater, and saltwater that accompanies sea level rise rob people of their livelihood. When there is no local sustainability, people are forced to migrate internally or externally to safe and employable areas.

South Asia is one of the most vulnerable regions in the world due to climate change. According to international organizations and migration reports, millions of people are left homeless every year due to floods, torrential rains, droughts and cyclones in the region. The graph of internal displacement in the region is rising rapidly due to weather-related disasters, while millions of people are forced to seek refuge in safer areas due to water scarcity, river erosion and inundation.

Although the effects of climate change in Bangladesh are extremely severe, sea level rise, cyclones and salinity are very severe, but many of the affected people seem reluctant or distracted to leave their places immediately. Due to the lack of economic capacity to migrate due to poverty, they do not have the financial capacity to migrate due to the lack of capital and land required to move to a new place and start life from scratch. Residents of coastal areas depend on fisheries and agriculture. They are forced to live in their old places even if they take risks because they will not be able to use their skills when they move to the cities and will have to live a more difficult slum life.

Nepal’s geographical structure is very sensitive and weak. The Bhotekoshi, Trishuli, Budhi Gandaki and their tributaries are at risk of glacier bursts, unprecedented heavy rainfall and continuous landslides in the hilly areas due to the impact of climate change.

There is a serious risk of floods, mudslides and river erosion, especially in the river corridors and basin areas like Rasuwa, Betrawati, Dhading and Nuwakot. If timely systematic settlement development, risk zone identification and scientific early warning system are not implemented, people in these areas are sure to be displaced and livelihoods will be in deep danger.

Environmental destruction and climate-related disasters have led to an increased trend of rural residents migrating to urban areas or abroad in search of safe housing and employment. As the IOM report points out, addressing climate change and displacement requires local and community-level initiatives, full implementation of risk-sensitive land use planning and effective early warning systems, and policy tightening.

Kathmandu.
