The international financial debate focuses on the effective use of insurance and reinsurance to address global financial risks, increase private investment, and manage disaster risk.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group (WBG) are jointly hosting their 2026 Annual Meeting in Bangkok, Thailand from October 12 to 18. The agenda of the meeting is to increase private investment, create new financing opportunities, and create jobs. The role of capital markets in reducing investment risk, financing in local currency, financial stability and policy reforms will also be discussed.

In countries affected by floods, cyclones, and climate change, there is an opportunity to increase the use of insurance to address the economic losses caused by disasters. If effective risk insurance can be implemented in agriculture, small businesses, housing, and infrastructure, it is possible to provide immediate financial assistance to the affected families and organizations after disasters.

The World Bank Group’s Crisis Preparedness and Response Framework provides opportunities to use disaster bonds, insurance, and other risk management products. It will reduce the immediate cost burden on governments when receiving funding through the insurance system in the event of a disaster. It also aims to share the risk of major disasters through international reinsurance and capital markets.

The Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency, a subsidiary of the World Bank Group, manages a guarantee system against certain risks for foreign investment. Such a mechanism can help reduce the risk of qualified investment projects and attract private capital.

There is also a need to expand digital services in the insurance sector, including the protection of customer information, claim verification, and fraud prevention. With the increasing use of technology, there is an opportunity to make the process of policy verification, premium collection and claim payment more transparent.

In addition, there is a need to strengthen companies’ financial reporting, liability, asset information, and regular audit systems of reinsurance. This will enable regulators to identify vulnerable companies early and take timely action to protect customer interests.

Developing such technical capabilities could potentially be an important area of international financial cooperation. However, it is not enough to simply implement the technology; it is also necessary to ensure data accuracy, independent auditing, and effective measures against regulatory violations.

In discussions with the World Bank, IMF and other relevant international organizations, it is important to distinguish between financing, technical assistance and policy reform. Discussions at the annual meeting can be an opportunity to gain experience and support for these reforms. – Agency

Kathmandu.
