How we train our brain is important. Despite having a long experience and a good knowledge of the subject, some people are not able to reach their goals. In such a situation, understanding some basic processes of the brain and applying it in daily work can help to increase focus, dedication, and confidence towards the goal.

Now let’s understand the three concepts of brain science: the Retachular Activating System (RAS), neuroplasticity, and myelin. This makes it easier for life insurance professionals to achieve success in both the sale and leadership of life insurance plans.

1. Retachular Activating System (RAS)

Thousands of notifications come to our mind every second. We cannot consciously pay attention to all of them. However, the information we value comes to our awareness. The Reticular Activating System (RAS) directs the brain to what to pay attention to, or it is the ‘filter system’ that selects the information. When we think of buying a car or bike, we find that the car or bike of the company we are trying to buy is running more on the road. Are there only the companies or colors of the company we are buying on the road? Of course not, our brain’s filter system focuses more on the same type of vehicles.

For life insurance agents and sales representatives: If we think that there is no money in the market or that people don’t buy insurance, then RAS only shows the same negative thinking, excused customers and rejections. But if you think that ‘I want to protect every family I know’, ‘I want to protect every family I know’, ‘I have to deposit at least Rs 15 lakh in the first insurance premium this month’, then RAS will show a similar type of potential customer.

Similarly, if agency managers or branch heads think that I am going to hire at least 15 new agents this month, then people with similar potential will start to appear in the market.

The goal does not create the opportunity itself; but it does focus our attention in the right direction to identify, seek and exploit the opportunity.

2. Neuroplasticity

Neuroplasticity is the ability of the brain to change and evolve in its structure, relationships, and functioning based on our experience, learning, and continuous practice. The brain is changing; new neural connections are formed in the brain as we learn new things, practice over and over again, and gain new experiences.

For example, learning to drive may initially make it difficult to coordinate clutch, brake, and steering, but with continuous learning, our brains form new neural connections and make learning easier.

When the brain thinks that it is difficult to sell a life insurance plan, no attempt is made to recruit an agent, follow-up decreases, joint field work, coaching, communication with customers, etc. all decrease, and after some time self-confidence weakens, excuses increase, goals are also lost because our mind is creating a repeat pattern of a failing mindset.

On the other hand, if we take every failure as a ‘useful feedback for learning’, make life insurance accountable to ourselves as ‘financial security for every family’, continuously follow the steps of the joint field work, follow-up, sales process – potential customer identification, need analysis, presentation of a plan, address inquiries or objections, etc., our brains form neural pathways leading to success.

Therefore, rather than just giving motivational speeches to agents, it is useful to role-play, simulate real sales situations, joint market visits, and regular coaching on a daily basis in finding potential customers, building relationships, identifying needs, presenting insurance plans, resolving queries or objections, etc. This gives an opportunity to practice sales skills and helps in developing confidence and paves the way for new thinking (neural pathways leading to success) in the mind.

3. Myelin

This is the fatty protective layer formed around our nerves. The more we practice the work repeatedly, the thicker the layer of myelin in the neuropathways.

Training or seminars alone do not make Mylin. For this, we have to practice continuously. Therefore, we constantly work on potential customer identification, constant contact and follow-up, need analysis, presentation of life insurance plan, addressing inquiries or objections, etc. Due to which we can easily achieve our goals.

For example, as you get accustomed to driving, shifting gears, braking, and looking at mirrors, sales skills such as contacting potential customers, identifying their needs, offering appropriate insurance plans, and effective follow-up become easier, more confident, and more proficient with practice.

Let’s turn the goal into a plan of action{

To succeed in the life insurance business, it is not enough to just set big goals. Goals should be turned into daily and weekly tasks. For example, a clear plan can be made about how many potential customers to contact, how many meetings to make, how many joint market visits to make, and how many follow-ups to follow-up.

In this process, RAS helps to focus on goals, neuroplasticity shows the possibility of developing skills through learning and practice, and regular, planned practice helps to make those skills more accessible and effective. These concepts should be understood not as miracle measures, but as the basis for strengthening goals, discipline, and practice.

Daniel Coyle’s book ‘The Talent Code’ popularly discusses the relationship between deep practice and skill development. Talent doesn’t just depend on innate ability; the right practice, consistency and improvement also play a big role in building skills.

Ultimately, sales start with our thinking, preparation, and behavior; only then will it be seen as a result in the market. If you set clear goals, learn the necessary skills, practice, and regularly review your work, then you can move forward in a planned way towards the goals that initially seemed difficult.

(The writer is Head of Training Department of IME Life Insurance Company) )

Sunil Kumar Acharya } There is no guarantee that success in any business will be achieved only by running hard or by working hard.
