Kathmandu. As many as 348 farmers who suffered damage to their paddy crops due to incessant and heavy rains from September 22 to 26 have received the climate insurance payment. <\/p>\n
The devastating landslide and floods in Rasuwa had affected all the 9 districts where the paddy insurance was implemented targeting both pre and post-harvesting phases. <\/p>\n
According to the data of the Meteorological Center, after the rainfall level crossed the 200 mm limit, the insurance claim was automatically activated in four districts of Banke, Bardiya, Kailali and Kanchanpur. These farmers did not have to wait for a long administrative process or damage as there was a risk of floods and inundation across the country. <\/p>\n
According to PlantSat, an organization providing technical assistance for this insurance scheme, 348 farmers will be paid a total of Rs 612,799 for the loss of paddy crop in a total area of 2,345 katthas. <\/p>\n
Under the parametric insurance system, there is no compulsion to fill any form, deploy a team and inspect it, or bear delays. In this system designed by Sagarmatha Lumbini Insurance, the amount is transferred directly to the farmers as soon as the weather monitoring center confirms that the limit has been exceeded. <\/p>\n
The risks of climate change are rising faster than our traditional systems can handle. But this initiative involving 1,204 smallholder farmers has proven that farmers do not have to face the climate crisis alone if the right combination of appropriate technology and policy arrangements is put in place. <\/p>\n
Farmers affected by the climate crisis did not have to wait for years for relief this time. They have received their payments on time and are ready to plant new crops again, according to PlantSat. <\/p>\n
