As of mid-July 2008, the annual consumer price inflation (inflation) in Nepal has increased to 5.96 percent. This means that the prices of daily consumables and services, including food, have increased rapidly in the market.

If the price rise reaches about 6 percent, it means that the amount of goods that can be bought with Rs 100 today will decrease in the coming days, that is, the value of the money will be weakened. When the prices of goods and services continue to rise in the market, the common man has to spend more money to consume as much as before. As a result, the daily kitchen of the regular income class has become very expensive.

On the contrary, the average interest rate on savings in banks and financial institutions has declined significantly compared to the previous year. The average deposit interest rate of commercial banks has come down from 4.02 percent to 3.15 percent in the review period.

Similarly, the average deposit interest rate of development banks has come down from 4.67 per cent to 3.51 per cent and that of finance companies has come down from 5.85 per cent to 4.18 per cent. As a result, the returns of savers who deposit money in the bank have shrunk to a very low point.

When the market inflation reached 5.96 percent, the interest rate of the bank has fallen to a low of 3 to 4 percent, which has caused a real loss (negative return) to the savers. When the market price is increasing by about 6 percent, the interest given by the bank is only about 3 percent, which means that the real purchasing power of the money kept in the bank has decreased.

Although the number of accounts has increased, due to the rapid increase in prices, the amount of goods that can be purchased with that amount decreases. As a result, senior citizens and small savers, who depend on the interest income of the bank, have been hit with double financial hardening.

Kathmandu.
