The magnitude of this incident has also shocked geologists. “The pain of the victims and the devastated villages is hard to believe,” says Ranjan Dahal, a geologist at Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu. <\/p>\n
Satellite images revealed that the flow of debris started from a huge block of rock and ice that fell from Langtang Lirung Mountain. This powerful flood descended at a speed of more than 160 to 190 kilometers per hour. It destroyed settlements along the river. <\/p>\n
Scientists estimate that the debris of fallen rock and ice is about 110 million cubic meters. That is enough to build 40 pyramids of 40 glasses. <\/p>\n
To understand the origin of this disaster, scientists have analyzed many factors. Initially, some thought that it could be due to the collapse of the glacier. However, satellite images revealed that a rock slab about 2.2 square kilometers wide had broken and collapsed at an altitude of about 5,150 meters in the northern part of the mountain. <\/p>\n
The role of climate change cannot be ignored in this phenomenon. Human-induced global warming is melting the snow connecting the mountains.
