Since the study and development system of Nepal’s life insurance sector is still in the developing stage, it is important to incorporate competitive merit-based and continuous learning methods into the institutional training system.

It is not limited to initial agent orientation or technical training but also needs to translate competencies into practice through intensive training, refreshing training, practical sales practices, skill development, digital learning, and regular skill measurement. In order to compete with the international life insurance market, Nepal’s insurance companies need to invest not only in compliance and knowledge but also in modern skills such as consultative sales, customer experience, financial advice, technology-based sales, and business leadership. From this perspective, the presented model provides a theoretical basis for the need to move from training-based methods to integrated, competency-based learning and development systems in Nepal’s life insurance sector.

The Conscious Learning Model, or matrix, explains the stages we learn and eventually acquire new skills. This model emphasizes that learning always begins with unconscious aptitude and that conscious learning passes through conscious competence before reaching unconscious ability.

Now let’s talk about each step.

1. Unconscious incompetence

}

At this stage, you don’t even realize what you don’t really know. You don’t know how much of your knowledge and C is, how much of it is.

Example: After taking a training in insurance, the new agent thinks that he knows everything. But when he goes to the market for insurance, he finally realizes that there is a lot left to learn.

In this phase, the role of a trainer or team leader is to establish an emotional connection with the customer and learn how to analyze the customer’s needs, explain the opportunities and challenges in the market, and learn how to solve the objections systematically.

2. Conscious incompetence

You realize at this stage that your knowledge or skills in certain subjects or aspects are obscure and incomplete.

Example: While learning to be an insurance agent, you will know that you need to understand much more such as insurance claim, surrender value, payment value, etc.

In this phase, the role of the coach or team leader should be trained in time management, objection management, amazing selling angle in insurance product presentation, etc. Under the training, emphasis should be given on joint homework. So that he gets the opportunity to learn from the team leaders in the field.

3. Conscious Ability

You begin to understand the subject matter well at this stage but you have to work carefully.

Example: The ability to explain the insurance policy to the customer is gradually developing. However, more practice is required for perfection.

Role of a coach or team leader in this phase: Role playing, direct phone contact, emphasis on group discussions, sharing the experience of successful agents, human value assessment in life insurance.

4. Unconscious aptitude

In this case, you can be fully aware of what you have to do and your SP starts to become automatic with only a little force. You become proficient automatically.

Example: After years of practice, you can easily submit an insurance plan to the customer.

The role of a coach or team leader at this stage: In this phase, how to organize the team, how to conduct training in the team, how to bring synergy to the team, etc.

At every stage, we should be taught to face the challenges in the market, to celebrate small achievements, to face the obstacles in the market, to build confidence, to present a life insurance plan, to build a leadership role, etc.

1. The Journey of a New Agent in Life Insurance Business

2. Four steps that a customer must go through before buying insurance{

}

3. Steps to learn ‘referral marketing’ by an insurance agent

4. Steps to learn how to sell a ‘high-end plan’ by an insurance agent

}

Conclusion

}

The way to go through this model is not linear and does not always end in the final stage (unconscious ability). A good example of this can be seen when learning to drive. If you do not practice regularly, you may see a drop from steps 4 to 3, or even steps 3 to 2. Most people reach stage 3 and are very happy to be there.

To succeed in the insurance business, every insurance agent must go through the above-mentioned four stages. New agents, old agents, customers – everyone experiences these stages. In a leadership role, you should be able to understand the stage your team members are in and give them the right training.

 (The writer is Head of Training Department of IME Life Insurance Company) )

Sunil Kumar Acharya } In the insurance business, a new agent has to develop skills such as customer needs identification, sales process, customer psychology, referral marketing, and selling high-value insurance plans through practice and training.
