Kathmandu. You have seen the map of the world so far, now it will look different. The United Nations General Assembly has passed the ‘Map Correct’ resolution. The purpose of which is to more accurately reflect the true size of countries and continents on the world map. <\/p>\n
164 countries, including India, France and the United Kingdom, supported the resolution. The United States was the only country to oppose it. While 6 countries abstained from voting. The African country Togo had presented the proposal. <\/p>\n
Countries and continents are not shown in their exact shape on the Mercator map. For example, the African continent and Greenland look the same on the Mercator map. However, in reality, Africa is 14 times larger. The new map shows the size of the land better with the same Earth projection. <\/p>\n
In 1569, Gerardus Mercator created the Mercator map to guide ships at sea. Gerardus Mercator was a Polish cartographer and his map was universally recognized. However, this map had some drawbacks. This was because it was impossible to project the map accurately on the surface of a two-dimensional globe. On the Mercator map, the countries near the equator look smaller. As they move farther away, their size increases. <\/p>\n
This decision does not affect the actual area of countries and continents. Only the size of the map can change. The new map does not change the border. Africa will appear much larger in the new projection. While Europe and North America will appear smaller. <\/p>\n
The General Assembly’s proposal is non-binding. This means that it is not necessary to immediately replace the maps used worldwide with Mercator maps. The main objective is to encourage more accurate and proportional cartographic methods. <\/p>\n
