Kathmandu.\u00a0Waling Municipality has decided to end the compulsion of farmers to go to the market with their vegetables and agricultural products. Waling Municipality has handed over an agriculture ambulance to the Triyashi Agriculture Produce Market Management Cooperatives Limited at Waling-1. <\/p>\n
Waling Municipality, Heifer International Nepal and Diyalo Sanstha (Waling Agriculture Development Project) jointly purchased the ambulance at a cost of Rs 32.90 lakh. Out of this, the municipality has managed Rs 1.89 million while the project has borne Rs 1.4 million. <\/p>\n
According to Chief Administrative Officer Jeevan Gyawali, the service has been launched with the objective of modernizing and systematizing the collection, transportation, storage and marketing of agricultural products. <\/p>\n
“This service is a farmer-friendly program to connect agricultural products from the farm to the market. Now, farmers will not have to worry about transportation for sale,” he said. <\/p>\n
Currently, around 50 quintals of vegetables are being collected from the cooperatives on a daily basis. It is expected that with the operation of the Agriculture Ambulance, vegetables will be collected from the farmers’ homes, hence the transportation cost will be reduced, time will be saved and the produce will reach the market in a fresh condition. <\/p>\n
Cooperatives chair Arjun Prakash Aryal expressed the confidence that the problems farmers have been facing for many years due to shortage of supplies would be resolved now. “Earlier, many vegetables used to rot in lack of transportation and it was difficult to transport them to the market,” Aryal said. Now, vegetables can be transported to Pokhara and Butwal on a regular basis through agriculture ambulances. \u201d<\/p>\n
Waling Municipality has been fixing the minimum support price of vegetables and providing subsidy of Rs 5 per kg on the basis of production. In the first 11 months of the last fiscal year, Rs 791,342 was distributed to the farmers. <\/p>\n
According to the cooperative’s manager Yubaraj Regmi, the cooperatives collected 158,268 kg of vegetables last year. “An agriculture ambulance can transport around 130 carats of vegetables at a time. This will not only reduce the transportation cost but also attract farmers towards commercial farming. \u201d<\/p>\n
The municipality is confident that with the operation of the agriculture ambulance, the agriculture supply chain from production to market will be strengthened. According to Bishnu Prasad Pandey, Senior Program Officer, Heifer Project Nepal, “This is expected to contribute significantly to increase the income of small and commercial farmers by expanding their market access.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
